Following a successful, sold-out debut at Mystic, CT last March, the Bonnell Cove Foundation and the Cruising Club of America have scheduled a second seminar in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday March 2, 2002.

The day-long session will focus on a question raised by many boating wives and crew members "What if I'm suddenly alone on the boat? Will I know what to do?" These are not novice sailors asking these questions, but rather experienced power and sailing voyagers with many miles of cruising and racing experience, yet a survey of the CCA's 1,100 members reveals that many have a real concern as to their ability to cope in a sudden short-handed situation.

The Ft Lauderdale Suddenly Alone Seminar, to be hosted by the CCA's Florida Station, will be held on Saturday March 2 from 0800-1700 hours at the Radisson Bahia Mar Beach Resort. The program will feature detailed "how to" discussions in four major areas: From Panic to Confidence - overcoming fear and emotional distress, Stabilizing the Yacht and Crew Overboard Recovery by the remaining crew member aboard sail and power boats, Radio Communications requesting assistance; and Single-Handed Navigation to a safe haven. Question and answer sessions on these and other topics, will be conducted in small, spin-off workshop sessions led by seasoned cruisers, many of whom have had "suddenly alone" experience themselves. Seventy-five percent of the first Seminar audience were couples, indicating an appeal not only to the person who is likely to be alone, but also to skippers who have a vested interest in being recovered or assisted should they become incapacitated.

While not a "safety at sea" seminar, Suddenly Alone is designed to supplement existing programs by addressing an area not presently covered. Cost is $100 per person including lunch and a detailed, personalized workbook. Space at the seminar is limited. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Bahia Mar, special rates $159 single, $169 double. Hotel reservations number (800) 327-8154.
